GEL OUTSIDER'S VIEW: COD, Glen Ellyn should kiss and make up

Now that the drama of the U.S. Congress doing its best to deep six the American economy is over, at least for the time being, we can safely turn our attention to a local issue in which, like the congressional battle, no one is covering himself with glory. I refer, of course, to the pressing question “Will the College of DuPage keep on working to de-annex itself from the village of Glen Ellyn...

Last week, the Village of Glen Ellyn sent a city inspector to threaten our contractors with citations if they continued to erect new electronic signs replacing older ones damaged by weather and time in the same locations. This was unfortunate, as we need these signs to communicate with the more than 30,000 students on our campus every semester.

College of DuPage President Robert L. Breuder with his wife Wendy

College of DuPage officials announced that they will pursue de-annexation from the village of Glen Ellyn after the Village Board voted Monday night to table an intergovernmental agreement previously reached by both parties on April 19.

The COD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the agreement at its April 28 meeting. COD President Robert L. Breuder informed Village President Mark Pfefferman in an April 29 communication that failure by the village to act on the agreement would result in COD pursuing de-annexation.

OPEN LETTER FROM VILLAGE OF GLEN ELLYN TRUSTEE PETER COOPER

Dear Friends:

It is almost precisely two years since I took my oath of office on becoming a Village Trustee for the Village of Glen Ellyn. During that time, I have tried to never lose sight of my sacred obligation to protect your trust and to pursue the best interests of our Village and its citizens. The work has frequently been hard and occasionally tedious, but it has almost always been rewarding.

GEL SHARE: COD gives Glen Ellyn an ultimatum

College of DuPage and Glen Ellyn officials appeared poised to end a long-running dispute about whether the college can install electronic signs on campus.

But a last-minute change to a proposed intergovernmental agreement by the village has both sides pointing fingers, suggesting they could be back to square one.

The village had previously argued that the college’s signs violated village code. But under the deal, the college would be allowed to keep the existing signs and install five new ones. New signs larger than 200 feet would require discussions with the village.
