A new majority of Glen Ellyn Park District board commissioners wasted no time Tuesday implementing measures intended to emphasize fiscal restraint.

It was the first board meeting with newly elected Commissioners Richard Dunn, Kathy Cornell and Gary Mayo, who ousted 12-year incumbent Ed Hess in the April election. They were endorsed by current Commissioners Melissa Creech, Jay Kinzler and Julia Nephew, who ran together as a slate two years before.

GEL SHARE: 2 Candidates Drop Out of Glen Ellyn Park District Race

Two candidates have withdrawn from the Glen Ellyn Park District board race.

Hugh Johnson said he decided to withdraw after officials informed him of the park district’s nepotism policy, which forbids board members from having family members who work for the district. Soon after Johnson filed his papers for candidacy, his wife was hired as a fitness coordinator.

GEL BIG PICTURE: Glen Ellyn Park District Responds to Open Letter

In March of 2006, a Park District $12.5 million referendum failed to achieve a successful vote from the residents for land acquisition; building a new Main Street Recreation Center with increased program rooms and a larger gymnasium to accommodate the growing recreational needs in our community; renovate the Lake Ellyn Boat House and construct new washrooms and shelter at Ackerman Park. 9,387 votes were cast with a majority voting against this referendum.

League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn Hosts Glen Ellyn Candidate Forum

The League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn is hosting a Candidates' Forum from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22 at Hadley Junior High School. Candidates for School District 41 Board, the Park Board and Village President have been asked to participate.

Question 1: What motivated you to seek a seat on the Park District Board?

Ron Aubrey: Initially, I finally had some time to volunteer and was looking to serve our children, families and the community in some special way. I have served as Park District Commissioner for over 5 years now and there are still some things left to do, such as completing:
• Ackerman Sports Complex
• Churchill Nature Center museum w/ new restoration and educational programs
• Safety Village
• Madonnari on Main 3D sidewalk chalk art festival
