Glen Ellyn Holiday Celebrations

GEL FUN: A Ride in the Sky with Santa

ERP_091127_5540

For years my wife and I have taken our children and out of town guests downtown to experience the Glen Ellyn Holiday Walk. It's a wonderful tradition - watching Santa stroll down Main St., squeeze into a fire truck snorkel, ride to the top of the Christmas (PC - Holiday) tree, then tickle the treetop to illuminate the lights to the screams of the crowd below.

On March 17, 2009, everybody will be considered Irish for the day. It is one of the many traditions born from this great holiday. Everyone is included- most people will wear green clothing, eat corn beef and cabbage and drink green beer.

In Ireland, this is considered a religious holiday. History states that most families would attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon with a feast of Irish bacon and cabbage. Any Lenten prohibitions against drinking and eating meat were waived for this celebratory day.
