GEL NEWS: Glen Ellyn Village Board Approves Montessori School Move

Diamante Montessori School Plan

After hearing public comment and deliberation, the Glen Ellyn Village Board last night approved plans for the Diamonte Montessori school to relocate from St Marks Church to the vacant building and property located at 625 Hillside Ave, the former location of Christ Church.

The new location for the school is at the corner of Park Boulevard and Hillside Avenue, mostly a residential neighborhood filled with single-family homes.

Like many families, businesses, non-profit organizations, and other municipalities across our nation, the Village of Glen Ellyn is juggling the financial woes of having to trim costs with finding new revenue sources to make up for budgetary shortfalls.

One avenue the Village Board is contemplating is to enact a 1% sales tax increase using its home rule authority. The increase would apply to the sale of products except: groceries, drugs (both prescription and non-prescription), and vehicles. Excluded from the tax are services like massage, medical treatments, and haircuts.

The following information was provided by Village Manager Steve Jones to detail recent news of village staff reductions and other cost reduction measures to balance the 2009 budget which begins May 1st.

Five Positions Eliminated
Facilities Manager – Administration (16 years)
Administrative Secretary – Public Works (11 Years)
Mail Clerk – Administration (20 years)
Custodian - Administration (3 years)
Secretary – Administration (22 years)

Full-time to part-time
Community Service Officer – Police Department (8 years)

Other cost cutting measures include:

Village Manager Steven Jones announced at a budget workshop Monday the decision to reduce staff payroll by laying off five Glen Ellyn village employees, and changing one-full time position to part-time.

The exact positions were not released, though the last day for the five employees is this Friday. Village President Vicky Hase echoed disappointment about the decision to let village employees go.
