GEL NEWS: Glen Ellyn Resident Opens Door for Ugandan Youth

Paula Maxwell, Raouf Radi, Jethro and Michael at Spokes Bike Shop

We don’t hear much about HIV/AIDS here in Glen Ellyn. We think of HIV/AIDS as a disease that exists way beyond our borders. And that’s partially true. While our community in the broader context is minimally impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, many residents have taken an active role in helping orphaned children in distant places live dignified and healthy lives, and offer spiritual peace and meaning. GEL SHARE: Did You Know V2 Online Video

Back in April, 2009, I posted the Did You Know V2 online video that presents many remarkable facts about the dynamic world we live in today and how it's being shaped for the future.

My wife saw it for the first time yesterday and we shared it with our 8 and 10 year old children. I thought it's so compelling I thought it made sense to post it again for more recent viewers to access.

SONES DE MEXICO PERFORM OCT. 4 AT THE MAC

Latin Grammy nominee Sones de Mexico, Chicago’s premiere Mexican folk ensemble, returns to the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage for a 3 p.m. Mainstage performance on Sunday, Oct. 4.

Formed in 1994, the ensemble has developed and popularized original arrangements of Mexican folk music, experimenting with cross-cultural sounds that incorporate Irish, folk, country, jazz and rock music.

Lauded for their ability to move seamlessly between styles and instruments, Sones de Mexico remains faithful to the cultural authenticity of the music, while adding their unique flair.

GEL VIEWS: Biggest Meteor Shower of the Year Peaks Tonight

Stay up past midnight, grab a blanket and go stargazing tonight: The year’s most spectacular meteor shower is expected to peak Wednesday morning around 1 a.m. (your local time), and then again just before dawn.

The Perseid meteor shower happens every year in August, when the Earth travels through a cloud of debris left by the periodic comet Swift-Tuttle, which last approached the Earth in 1992. Under optimal conditions, up to 80 shooting stars can be seen every hour, although how many you’ll see tonight depends on cloud cover, the brightness of the moon and the proximity of city lights.

Diamante Montessori School Plan

After months of vigorous debate and numerous public hearings, the Diamonte Montessori school move to a vacant church at the corner of Park Blvd and Hillside is closer to reality.

Neighboring residents and property owners sought court action to temporarily restrict the Village of Glen Ellyn's approval to modify the zone code and allow the school to relocate to the site.

Last week a DuPage County Circuit Court judge ruled against the injunction that would restrict progress of the school's plans to relocate while the lawsuit is heard in court.
