Kidjazz! at the MAC March 6

Join the Arts Center Jazz Ensemble (ACJE) and Chicago musicians Reginald Robinson and Darryl Boggs for an introduction to jazz that not only is fun to listen to, but gets family members dancing in the aisles.

Kidjazz! will be presented at the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn, at 7 p.m. Friday, March 6. This annual presentation is co-sponsored by WDCB, 90.9 FM.

Children and their parents will learn the roots, instruments and musicians that make American jazz so great. But the fun starts before the performance even begins. Arrive early for a free lesson in how to do the Madison Time, a simple line dance that incorporates moves inspired by popular culture. The dance, which was popular in the 1950s and appeared in the 1988 film “Hairspray,” will be incorporated into a Kidjazz! performance of Ray Bryant’s “The Madison Time,” along with some call and response between the audience and the musicians on stage.

The Kidjazz! performance also includes works by Bo Diddley, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, along with songs by Boggs, Robinson and ACJE Music Director Tom Tallman.

Led by Tallman, the Arts Center Jazz Ensemble is one of the MAC’s five resident groups. Members include full-time students, community members and professional musicians who share an interest in American jazz, pop, soul and Latin music.

Tallman, a C.O.D. music professor, is a band leader and performer who has worked with a multitude of artists, including Joe Williams, Carl Fontana and Dizzy Gillespie.

Boggs is a bass and guitar player and vocalist who’s toured and performed since the 1970s and has played with a number of artists, including Tony Bennett, Tyrone Davis and The Imaginations.

Robinson, a self-taught pianist and composer, became fascinated with Ragtime during a seventh-grade presentation when a group of musicians visiting his school played “The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin. He has performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival and written and performed music for both theater and film.

Tickets to Kidjazz! are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors, College of DuPage students and children age 17 and younger.
