GEL PEOPLE: Glen Ellyn Boys Awarded Highest Rank in Boy Scouting

Glen Ellyn Eagle Scouts Frank Modruson, Philip Woods, Braeden Stanley and Andrew Radon

Three Fires Council Troop 41 is proud to announce that Frank Modruson, Andrew Radon, Braeden Stanley and Philip Woods earned their Eagle Scout rank in November 2010. Only 2% of all Boy Scouts achieve the Eagle rank, the highest rank in Scouting. There will be a ceremony on March 19 at the First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn to commemorate their outstanding achievement.

The boys have been in Scouting together as long as 11 years, first in Cub Scout Pack 45 and since 2004 in Boy Scout Troop 41. They participated as a group in a two week backcountry hiking adventure at the Philmont Scout camp in New Mexico in 2009. To earn their Eagle awards each of the boys completed a community service project that required extensive planning, coordination and leadership.

Frank Modruson’s project involved configuration and installation of twelve computers in residential homes at Misericordia, a nonprofit organization in Chicago that helps people with developmental disabilities. He directed a team of volunteers in configuring software and physically setting up the computers in the homes to make sure they were working properly. Having a computer in the place where they live will help introduce these residents to the new and changing technology and provide them new skills.

Frank was a senior patrol leader, patrol leader and quartermaster in Troop 41, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow, representing community service and leadership. Frank is home-schooled and a member of St. Petronille Church.

Andrew Radon organized volunteers and arranged for contributions of the materials to build a compost bin for the garden plots at the Village Green so the gardeners would have organic fertilizer. Andrew’s project enhances Glen Ellyn’s environmental profile via organic composting and reduces the Villages’ costs. Andrew was a senior patrol leader and is now an assistant scout master in Troop 41. He participates in wrestling, cross country and rugby. Andrew is a senior at Glenbard West and a member of First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn.

Braeden Stanley led a group of over 50 workers to clean up and refurbish the Benjamin Gault Bird Sanctuary in Glen Ellyn. They carved out a wide path and mulched the area with woodchips provided by the Glen Ellyn Park District. They cleaned up and leveled the ground at the seating area to make it easily accessible and replaced the bench with a sturdier new bench with name of the bird sanctuary carved on the back rest. Finally, Braeden had a new information sign for the sanctuary designed and installed. Restoring and enhancing the sanctuary provided a place for people to appreciate the beauty of the spot.

Braeden was an assistant senior patrol leader and patrol leader, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow and of Venturing Crew 47. He has participated in wrestling, soccer, baseball and lacrosse. Braeden is an AP Scholar and received the National Youth Council Certificate of Merit. He also placed 1st at the Glenbard West Juried Art show. Braeden is a senior at Glenbard West and a member of DuPage Unitarian Universalist Church.

Philip Woods collected and donated 60 backpacks of school supplies to a charity in the Brazilian city he lived in for 6 months during his 8th grade year. The charity teaches job and life skills to underprivileged children. These supplies will enable the organization to provide the training and tools to help the kids get off the streets and get an education and a job.

Philip was senior patrol leader, patrol leader and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. Philip is an AP Scholar, an Illinois Scholar and a National Merit Scholar. Philip has qualified as a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. He has participated in soccer, track and cross country, as well as orchestra. Philip is a senior at Glenbard West and a member of St. James the Apostle Church.
